Once you have a goal in mind, the steps to reaching it are easy.
1. Set the goal
2. Take action steps toward the goal.
3. Achieve the goal.
See, easy, right?
The problem is, most people quit when it comes to taking action.
They freeze.
They become overwhelmed.
They put themselves in a cycle of action and inaction. Eventually it becomes too much and they quit.
The action wasn’t getting them closer to their goal.
All it was doing was making them feel inadequate.
Planning your action steps is so important. But what is more important is making sure those steps make sense.
They should actually move you forward, closer to your goal. For example, if you have a list of things you want to get done today and you make a to do list, that list should be doable.
Don’t write 20 things on there knowing you will never be able to get it all done.
You know what happens?
You do 3 things, get overwhelmed by the list, and sit down to scroll social media for the next 2 hours. That’s exactly how NOT to get things done.
So get a piece of paper to write down your goal, followed by your action steps.
You want to write down every single action.
Let’s say you want to make a budget.
What will you do first?
- Write down your net income
- Write down all of your monthly bills
- Look back over the last 1-3 months of spending. See where you spend, how much and take an average. Go out 3 times a week? Have weekly date night? Groceries, entertainment, gas, kids activities, field trips, birthdays, etc. It all counts. Write all the categories down.
- Subtract all of the expenditures from your income.
- Want to increase that amount? You gotta pay down debt and stop spending so much. So decide on a new spending number that you can actually follow. If you go out 3 times a week, don’t tell yourself you won’t go out anymore. Doing that will just make you feel resentful. Take it down to 2 times a week or once a week. Or decrease the amount you spend when you go out. Or both.
Going after your goals should be a part of your life. It should be entwined with your daily living. It should not be something that always gets pushed aside because something else got in the way- like time, money, or energy.
The action steps have the answer.
Let’s take some action today.
