We’ve all had it. It’s when you spent way more than you should have, ate way more than you needed to, drank too much, you get the picture. It’s when we did too much of everything we were hoping to control this year. Most people have the biggest regret when it comes to what they spent. Their credit card bill comes in the mail and the reality hits them quick. Then the thoughts come. “Why did I do this again?” “When will I ever learn?” “How will I pay this off?” And then the shaming joins in. “I am so stupid!”. “I don’t deserve money when I can’t control it” ” I am never going to get out of debt”.
Stop.
None of that is true. What IS true is that you haven’t learned how to manage your money, your behaviors around money, or your mindset when it comes to money.
It’s that simple.
So this year, let’s try things a little differently ok?
1. First, tell yourself out loud (this is important) that you accept what you have spent and will not tear yourself down because of it. And then most importantly, do what you said.
2. Develop your plan to pay on it. If that means you are sending money every month, even if it’s only the minimum due, so what? Pay it.
3. Determine what your goal is for next year, in writing. Want to make a budget? Want to learn how to control your impulse spending? Want to learn how to manage your money in all areas? Pick your goal and then do it.
You can’t keep going year into year beating yourself up for making the same mistakes, yet you do nothing to change them.
Stop telling yourself that you can’t do it and start showing yourself that you can. It may take lots of small steps for you to get where you want to be. But what matters is that you are moving forward to reach your goal.
So many people say the reason they stop is because they “lost their motivation”. Motivation doesn’t last. You know what does? Taking action. Moving forward. Look at the progress you have made, no matter how long it’s taking or how slow it’s going. Tell yourself that you will keep going!
Don’t just make another New Year’s resolution. This year, make a doable plan to actually reach your goals. You have it in you. You just need to start believing it.
I believe you can do it.
